Class Overview
The mojo bag is the staple amulet of African American Hoodoo, a hand-crafted power object filled with spirit-charged materials known to carry ashè. Often called a conjure hand, root bag, lucky hand, gree-gree, or medicine bag, the mojo is a living spiritual tool used for attraction, protection, luck, drawing, and influence.
In this live virtual workshop, we will explore the history, cultural roots, and spiritual function of mojo bags within Hoodoo and African diasporic traditions. You will learn the differences between various types of hands including personal mojo bags, nation sacks, jack bags, trick bags, lucky hands, and paper mojos, and how each is traditionally worked.
We will complete our mojo bags together live, with guided instruction on selecting ingredients, preparing materials, writing petitions, incorporating personal concerns, and properly awakening the hand so it is set to work.
This class will also cover how to feed, carry, care for, and respectfully retire a mojo bag, what strengthens or weakens a hand, and how revival may be attempted if a bag loses its life force.
This is a hands-on teaching workshop intended to deepen understanding of Hoodoo practices and ancestral power objects. Participants will leave with both a completed mojo bag and the knowledge to confidently work and maintain it moving forward.

In Paper, Ink & Flame, we break down the art of petition writing, the old way and the effective way. We’ll talk about how to ask, what to say, and when to say it, because words are spirits and petitions are contracts.

You’ll be guided step by step in creating your own garlic charm, learning how to properly prepare, dress, and charge it for your specific intention. Opening Course, Cleansing the Hands
We begin by washing and preparing the hands and spirit. This opening sets the tone for cooking as ritual, not routine. You’ll learn how to spiritually prepare yourself before entering the kitchen so your food carries intention instead of stress.
The Broth, Laying the Foundation
Every conjure meal starts with a base. In this course, we discuss how broths, oils, and foundations hold prayer. You’ll learn how to build flavor as a spiritual structure, layering intention, timing, and focus into the first pot.
The Main Dish, Feeding the Work
This is the heart of the conjure dinner. We’ll cook together live, focusing on how ingredients are chosen, cut, seasoned, and stirred with purpose. You’ll learn how to cook for protection, attraction, healing, grounding, and strength, and how to direct your work through the meal.
The Seasoning, Command and Sweeten
Seasoning is instruction. In this portion, we cover how spices, herbs, and kitchen staples are used to command outcomes, sweeten situations, or add heat to your work. You’ll learn when to stir clockwise or counterclockwise and how to speak to your food.
The Simmer, Letting Spirit Work
Not all conjure is rushed. Here we focus on patience, timing, and allowing Spirit to move through the pot. You’ll learn when to cover, when to uncover, and how rest is part of the work.
The Plate, Presentation and Offering
We close by plating the meal with intention. We’ll discuss feeding yourself versus feeding others, how to offer food to Spirit and ancestors, and how to dispose of or store conjure food respectfully.
The Grace, Praying Over the Food
Before the meal is consumed or offered, we pause for grace.
In this portion of the class, we focus on how to properly pray over food as a spiritual act. You’ll learn how grace is used to bless the meal, speak intention into what has been prepared, and invite Spirit and ancestors to partake in the work.
We’ll cover how to pray over food for nourishment, protection, healing, clarity, and peace, how to give thanks for the hands that prepared it and the spirits that guided it.
Closing Sip, Sealing the Work
We seal the class with a final word, blessing, or sip to close the working and ground the energy.
